In the Venda culture, “Shula” refers to the traditional practice of smearing cow dung on the floors of houses during construction. This ancient technique holds cultural significance and practical benefits. The application of cow dung serves as a natural and sustainable flooring material, providing insulation, durability, and protection against insects and other pests. Additionally, it imparts a unique aesthetic to the interior, reflecting the harmony between nature and human habitation.
To “Shula” involves collecting cow dung, mixing it with other natural materials like clay and straw, and skillfully applying it to the floor surface. This age-old practice not only enhances the structural integrity of the dwelling but also fosters a strong connection to the land and the environment.
